Planning a gallery wall

A gallery wall looks planned, not accidental, when it follows a few simple rules.

Start on the floor

Lay the pieces out on the floor, or cut paper to size and tape it to the wall, before you drill anything. Leave 5 to 8 cm (2 to 3 in) between pieces.

Keep one thing the same

  • Same frame colour and different sizes for a relaxed gallery.
  • Same size and different pictures for a tidy grid, for example a set of three.
  • A mix of canvas and framed prints if the colours in the pictures repeat.

Centre of the group

Hang the centre of the group at about 145 cm (57 in) from the floor, roughly eye level, and work outwards.
