A frame is part of the picture. These rules of thumb work in most rooms.
Frame colour
- Black is crisp and works with almost anything, especially black and white photos and graphics.
- White disappears on a light wall and keeps a bright, Scandinavian look.
- Natural oak adds warmth and suits landscapes, botanical prints and wood furniture.
- Walnut is deeper and suits portraits and classic paintings.
Mat or no mat
A mat is the border between the picture and the frame. It gives a photo room to breathe and makes a small print look larger and more valuable. Skip the mat for bold graphics and posters that should fill the frame.
