Silver darkens with air and skin, and plating wears with perfume, water and friction. A soft polishing cloth and a closed box solve most of it.
Put on perfume and lotion first, then your jewelry, and take rings and cuffs off for swimming and cleaning.
Engraved lines stay sharp for years: polish along them, never across.
